Metal Roofing in Texas: Pros, Cons, and Cost Factors
Standing seam vs exposed fastener, heat, hail, noise, and lifespan. An honest look at metal roofing for Houston homes.
Read MoreTexas leads the country in hail claims, and the Houston area gets its share of damaging storms. If you are replacing your roof, one of the most common questions is whether impact-resistant shingles are worth the extra cost. For many Houston homeowners, the answer is yes. Here is why.
Impact resistance for roofing is commonly tested under the UL 2218 standard. In the test, steel balls of increasing size are dropped onto the shingle from a set height to simulate hail. The shingle is then checked for cracks or tears.
A Class 4 rating does not mean a shingle is hail-proof. Very large hail can still cause damage. But Class 4 shingles hold up to typical hailstorms much better than standard shingles.
Most Class 4 asphalt shingles use either a reinforcing fabric or mesh on the back or a rubber-modified asphalt, often called SBS-modified asphalt. SBS shingles stay more flexible, so they tend to absorb impacts rather than crack. Flexibility also helps them handle temperature swings.
Consider Class 4 shingles if you plan to stay in your home several years or more, if your area has a history of hail, or if your insurer offers a solid discount. Add up the extra cost, subtract your expected insurance savings over the years, and factor in the value of avoiding a future claim. For many homeowners in Katy, Cypress, and north Houston, where hail is common, the math works out.
To get an insurance discount, your insurer will likely ask for proof of the shingle's rating and installation. Keep the manufacturer's product information, your invoice showing the exact shingle line, and any certificate your roofer provides.
