Read MoreA mansard roof is a four-sided design with two distinct slopes on each side: a steep, almost vertical lower slope, and a much shallower (sometimes flat) upper slope. It originated in French Renaissance and Second Empire architecture and is named after the 17th-century French architect François Mansart.
Unlike a simple gable or hip roof, a mansard roof's steep lower slope often includes dormer windows and functions almost like an additional exterior wall, which is what makes it possible to fit a fully usable living space or attic story underneath — historically a way to add a floor without it counting as a "story" for tax purposes in Paris.
Mansard roofs are less common in the Houston area than gable or hip designs, but they do appear on certain historic and custom homes. If you have one, proper flashing and drainage on the shallow upper slope is especially important given our region's heavy rainfall. JD Roofing Solutions can inspect and maintain mansard roofing as part of our residential services.
