Your new roof is scheduled. A little preparation in the days before makes installation day go faster, keeps your belongings safe, and reduces stress for everyone at home. Here is a simple checklist.
A Few Days Before
- Confirm the details. Double-check the start date, shingle color, and anything else you agreed on. Make sure HOA approval is in hand if required. See HOA rules for roof replacement.
- Let your neighbors know. Roofing is loud and there will be a dumpster or trailer nearby. A heads-up goes a long way.
- Plan for kids and pets. The noise can upset pets, and the work zone is no place for children. Many families arrange daycare, a pet sitter, or a day out.
- Plan your workday. If you work from home, the hammering may make calls difficult. Consider working elsewhere for the day.
Outside the House
- Clear the driveway. Move cars into the street or garage so the crew can place the dumpster and access the roof. Debris can fall near the house, so keep vehicles away from the walls.
- Move patio furniture, grills, and potted plants away from the house.
- Mow the lawn a day or two before. Short grass makes it easier to find stray nails during cleanup.
- Mark sprinkler heads, septic covers, and anything fragile in the yard.
- Turn off sprinklers on installation day.
- Unlock gates and make sure exterior outlets are accessible if the crew needs power.
Inside the House
- Take down wall decor on top-floor walls and ceilings. Vibration from hammering can knock pictures, mirrors, and shelves loose.
- Cover items in the attic with sheets or tarps. Dust and debris can fall through gaps during tear-off.
- Move valuables out of the attic if possible.
- Secure light fixtures and chandeliers that might rattle.
On Installation Day
- Be available by phone in case the crew finds something like rotted decking that needs your approval.
- Stay out of the work zone around the house.
- Keep pets indoors or away from the house.
After the Job
- Walk the property with the crew lead and point out anything that concerns you.
- Watch for stray nails in the driveway and yard for a few days, even after the magnetic sweep.
- Keep your invoice, warranty paperwork, and shingle details together. See roof warranties explained.
- If you have an insurance claim, send the final invoice to your insurer to release any recoverable depreciation.
