Wind Damage on a Roof: 8 Signs to Look For

JD Roofing Solutions · · 2 min read

Houston roofs face strong winds from tropical storms, hurricanes, and the severe thunderstorms that roll through every spring. Wind damage is not always dramatic. Sometimes it is a whole section of shingles torn away, but often it is subtle damage that leads to leaks months later. Here are the signs to look for.

How Wind Damages a Roof

Wind does not push straight down on a roof. As it flows over the house, it creates uplift, especially at the edges, corners, and ridge. If a shingle edge lifts, wind gets underneath and can bend, crease, or tear it off. Once one shingle goes, the ones around it become easier targets.

8 Signs of Wind Damage

  1. Missing shingles. The most obvious sign. Look for spots where the color is different, or where you can see the underlayment or bare wood.
  2. Lifted or flapping shingles. Shingles that have come unsealed may look slightly raised or wavy, even if they are still attached.
  3. Creased shingles. When wind lifts a shingle and drops it, it can leave a horizontal crease line. Creased shingles have lost their seal and are likely to blow off in the next storm. This is easy to miss from the ground.
  4. Damaged ridge caps. The ridge takes some of the strongest wind forces. Look for missing or cracked cap shingles.
  5. Damaged edges and corners. Check the rakes and eaves where wind uplift is highest.
  6. Lifted or bent flashing. Flashing around chimneys and walls can pull loose, opening a path for water.
  7. Shingle debris in the yard. Pieces of shingles or ridge cap on the ground are a clear sign something came off.
  8. Leaks or stains inside. New water stains on ceilings or in the attic after a storm often point to wind damage above.

Damage From Debris

High winds also throw debris. Branches, patio furniture, and neighbors' loose items can puncture shingles or crack vents. A falling limb can damage decking or even rafters. Any impact from a heavy object should be inspected, even if the roof looks fine from below.

Why Small Wind Damage Matters

A few creased or unsealed shingles may not leak today, but they will not hold up in the next storm. Wind-damaged areas also let rain blow under the shingles, which can rot the decking over time. And if you wait too long, it becomes harder to tie the damage to a specific storm for insurance purposes.

Wind Ratings on Shingles

Shingles carry wind resistance ratings based on standardized tests. Many architectural shingles are rated for wind speeds well above what standard 3-tab shingles handle, especially when installed with the manufacturer's high-wind nailing pattern. If you are replacing your roof, ask your roofer about wind ratings and installation methods. Our comparison of architectural vs 3-tab shingles covers this in more detail.

What to Do Next

Photograph what you can see from the ground, and then schedule a professional inspection. A roofer can check for creased and unsealed shingles up close, which is where most hidden wind damage hides. If the damage is significant, see our insurance claim guide.
