Houston Hurricane Season Roof Prep Checklist
A practical, step-by-step checklist to get your roof, gutters, and paperwork ready before a Gulf storm heads toward Houston.
Read MoreHail is one of the most common causes of roof damage in the Houston area, and one of the hardest for homeowners to see. Unlike a missing shingle after a windstorm, hail damage often looks like nothing from the ground. But even moderate hail can crack shingle mats, knock off protective granules, and shorten the life of your roof by years.
Here is what hail actually does to a roof, what you can safely check yourself, and when to call in a professional.
Asphalt shingles are covered with ceramic-coated granules that protect the asphalt from UV rays. When a hailstone hits a shingle, it can:
Hail hits tend to be random, with no clear pattern. Damage that is in neat lines or only in one small area is more likely to be wear, foot traffic, or a manufacturing issue.
You do not need to climb a ladder to find good clues. In fact, you should not. Look for these instead:
If the soft metals around your home are dented, there is a good chance your roof took hits too.
Hail size matters, but it is not the only factor. Wind speed, the angle of impact, the age of your roof, and the type of shingle all play a role. As a general guide, hail around one inch in diameter (about the size of a quarter) and larger is where damage to asphalt shingles becomes common. Older roofs that have lost flexibility can be damaged by smaller hail. Impact-resistant Class 4 shingles are designed to hold up much better.
A hail-damaged roof often keeps working for a while, which tempts homeowners to ignore it. The problem is that the damage gets worse over time. Exposed asphalt degrades faster in Texas sun, cracked mats let water in, and broken seals let the next storm lift shingles. Insurance policies also have deadlines for reporting damage, and waiting too long can hurt your claim.
